Built by a social worker, for a community that deserves better tools

Veteran suicide is not primarily a story about a single terrible day. It is a story about erosion: the structure of service ends, the unit disperses, purpose gets fuzzy, and days start to look the same. Loneliness and the loss of a clear role are among the most consistent threads running through veteran suicide research.

The resources meant to help often make that worse. They are scattered across dozens of agencies and nonprofits, organized by the provider’s categories rather than the veteran’s life, and they usually require the veteran to already know exactly what to search for and to have the energy to search for it. On the hardest days, nobody has that energy.

VetGRID flips the entry point. Instead of asking “what problem do you have,” it asks “what are you interested in?” From there it does the work of finding real, local, specific things to do — a woodworking shop, a hiking group, a class, a volunteer shift — and explains why each one was surfaced for you.

VetGRID began as a Doctor of Social Work (DSW) capstone project and continues as the basis of ongoing dissertation work. That origin shapes how it is built: the matching logic is deliberately transparent and rule-based rather than a black box, so its reasoning can be described, critiqued, and defended in scholarly writing.

The intent is a practice-informed intervention that can be evaluated — what veterans select, what they engage with, and where the gaps in local offerings sit. Aggregate, de-identified patterns inform the research; individual accounts stay private.

VetGRID does not provide clinical care, therapy, benefits adjudication, or crisis intervention. We are a connector. When someone needs urgent help, the right answer is the Veterans Crisis Line, and we say so on every screen.

VetGRID is a registered nonprofit. Veterans, dependents, and caregivers use the platform at no cost. Operating costs, outreach, and participation subsidies are covered by grants, individual donations, and in-kind contributions from local businesses and service providers. Businesses that donate services or seats receive documentation for a tax-deductible in-kind contribution.
