If today is hard, start here

VetGRID is not a crisis service. These are the people who are, and they answer around the clock. Reaching out is not weakness — it is the same thing you would tell someone in your unit to do.

Worried about another veteran?

You do not have to diagnose anything. Ask directly, plainly, and without flinching: “Are you thinking about killing yourself?” Asking does not plant the idea. It tells them the door is open.

Listen without arguing them out of how they feel. Help them reduce access to firearms and medication for now — time and distance save lives. Then stay involved: make the call together, drive them, follow up tomorrow.

You can also call 988 and press 1 for guidance on how to help someone else. Family and friends are welcome to use the line.
